Tunisia Tourism Bounces Back a Decade After Sousse Attack, Driven by European Confidence

The revival of British tourism carries symbolic weight for Tunisia, given that most victims of the 2015 Sousse attack were British. This year, British tourists have returned in record numbers, with hoteliers in Sousse noting that more than 90 percent of their European guests now come from the UK. British Ambassador to Tunisia, Roddy Drummond, has also expressed optimism, stressing that strengthened security and improved travel experiences are restoring trust and paving the way back to pre-2015 visitor levels.

Despite the gains, concerns remain over how the benefits of the tourism boom are distributed. Local businesses and artisans argue that the dominance of all-inclusive resorts limits opportunities for visitors to engage with communities and directly support smaller enterprises. Tourism officials are therefore seeking strategies to promote more independent travel and encourage tourists to explore outside resort areas. Expanding low-cost flight options and improving regional air connectivity are among the measures being considered to diversify Tunisia’s tourism offering.

As Tunisia works to balance growth with inclusivity, the outlook remains highly positive. With the country on course to welcome a record 11 million visitors by year’s end, the sector’s recovery highlights not only a restored sense of safety but also a renewed opportunity for tourism to strengthen the wider economy. For Tunisia, 2025 marks a turning point—a decade after tragedy, the nation is reclaiming its place on the global tourism map.
