Eritrea’s Hospitality Market: A Quiet Sector with Untapped Potential

Eritrea’s hospitality industry remains relatively modest, shaped by limited international tourism and a tightly regulated economy.

The sector is anchored in Asmara, where colonial-era architecture and UNESCO World Heritage status offer unique appeal. However, the number of hotels and guesthouses is small, and many operate without formal strategic plans or marketing frameworks.

A 2019 study found that over 65% of Eritrean hotels lacked business or marketing plans, limiting their competitiveness and growth.

Despite this, there is growing interest in modernizing the sector, with some properties adopting smart room technologies and online booking platforms to attract diaspora visitors and regional travelers.

The government’s cautious approach to foreign investment and tourism promotion continues to shape the pace of development, but the country’s cultural richness and architectural charm suggest long-term potential if policy shifts allow for greater openness.
