Top Districts in Ghana Leading in Green Spaces and Park Development

Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives, MMDCEs, who preside over areas with the most green spaces and parks, are recognized for overseeing jurisdictions that not only prioritize urban growth but also balance it with environmental sustainability. Green spaces and parks are essential parts of modern urban planning as they enhance the quality of life, promote tourism, create jobs, preserve biodiversity, and serve as natural buffers against the effects of climate change. In Ghana, certain districts stand out for their commitment to protecting and developing such areas, ensuring that nature remains an integral part of their communities.

In the Western North Region, the Bia West District is home to Bia National Park, one of Ghana’s largest protected areas. Spanning over 56,000 hectares, this tropical forest reserve remains a symbol of conservation and eco-tourism. Its biodiversity, which includes endangered species and rich vegetation, makes it a green asset not only for the district but also for Ghana at large. The park generates tourism potential while also sustaining local livelihoods through eco-friendly initiatives.

In the Greater Accra Region, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly hosts significant green spaces such as Efua Sutherland Children’s Park, Legon Botanical Gardens, and the Achimota Forest Reserve. These spaces are vital in a rapidly expanding capital, providing relaxation, recreation, and environmental protection. Despite urban pressures, the presence of these green lungs underlines the importance of deliberate park development in Accra’s planning agenda.
