The European Investment Bank (EIB), through its development arm EIB Global, is reshaping Kenya’s housing landscape by investing in sustainable, affordable housing solutions. The project, which broke ground in January 2024, consists of more than 200 one- and two-bedroom apartments and is expected to be completed by October 2025. These homes are being built to green certification standards, combining affordability with long-term sustainability.

Speaking at the inaugural IHS Kenya Affordable Housing Conference in Nairobi, Edward Claessen, the head of EIB’s Eastern Africa regional office, emphasized that the bank’s support goes beyond financing. He explained that EIB Global combines capital investment with advisory services to ensure projects achieve their intended social and environmental impact. He noted that the bank is working with planners, policymakers and local experts to improve living conditions, reduce energy costs, and foster climate-resilient urban development across Kenya.

The IHS Kenya Green Housing Fund has also attracted wider investor confidence, securing a total of €83.4 million (Sh12.3 billion) in commitments from multiple equity partners. This funding is enabling IHS Kenya to scale up its efforts with the ambitious target of delivering 4,000 affordable green homes by 2030. According to Managing Director Kioi Wambaa, the fund’s vision is to redefine affordable housing by setting new standards that combine accessibility, quality, and sustainability. He affirmed that the partnership with EIB Global is helping Kenya to take meaningful steps toward addressing its urban housing crisis while aligning with global goals on climate action.
