Ghana bids farewell to victims of helicopter crash

President John Dramani Mahama led the nation in bidding farewell to the eight patriots who lost their lives in the tragic military helicopter crash at Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region. The solemn state funeral, held at the Black Star Square, brought together families, colleagues, military personnel, government officials, and members of the public to pay their respects.

In his address, President Mahama acknowledged the profound grief caused by the crash, noting that no technical explanation or official investigation could make sense of such a devastating loss.

Despite whatever technical reasons or official explanations and investigation may yield, a loss of this magnitude and in this manner will never make sense to the bereaved. What we can do, each of us in our own way, as we try to come to terms with this tragic loss, is to move in the direction of peace within our communities and families, having been reminded of how fragile life can be,” he said.

The President urged Ghanaians to come together to promote peace and uphold a vision for a prosperous nation, emphasizing the need to protect the children left behind by the tragedy.

> “What we can do together as a nation is make sure that the lives of those who remain, specifically the children of our eight brothers, do not become the unintended victims of this tragedy,” he said.

President Mahama also announced posthumous promotions for three Ghana Air Force officers who died in the crash: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala to Wing Commander, Flying Officer Manean Twum Ampadu to Flight Lieutenant, and Sergeant Ernest Adom Mensah to Flight Sergeant.

> “These are not just symbolic gestures; they represent the rightful place these officers have earned in our Republic’s roll of honour. And the benefits due to their families will be reflected in these new ranks,” he added.

In addition, the President announced the establishment of a Children’s Support Fund for the victims’ children, covering education from primary to tertiary level, healthcare, and welfare support. Stanbic Bank has opened an account with an initial GH¢500,000 contribution, and the government will make an immediate seed contribution.

> “Government will operationalise and publish a detailed framework of the Children’s Support Fund within the next 30 days. My office will ensure that it is sustained in the long term, with annual public reporting on how it has been used,” President Mahama said.

The state funeral concluded with full military honours, solemn tributes, and prayers, offering closure to grieving families and a reminder of the courage, dedication, and service of the fallen heroes.
