With an energising flourish, Tourism Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie has inaugurated the new boards for the Ghana Tourism Authority and the Ghana Tourism Development Company, signalling the government’s renewed ambition to position Ghana as a must-see world tourism destination. The boards, entrusted with bold and creative stewardship, will drive the sector toward durable expansion, fresh innovation, and tighter collaboration among every partner in the value chain.
Tourism already anchors the broader economic diversification drive, and these appointments come at a precisely opportune moment. Ghana is ready to regain its travel tide and deepen its profile in the world market, broadening the nation’s tourism footprint for years to come.
During separate inauguration ceremonies held in Accra, Minister Gomashie emphasised the need for integrity and professionalism in the leadership of the new boards. She urged the appointees to honour the trust placed in them by President John Mahama by ensuring the development and execution of policies that would fully unlock the potential of Ghana’s tourism sector.
The appointments, drawing attention from various sectors, are seen as a decisive move toward revitalising the industry. The newly sworn-in boards bring together a diverse mix of expertise from academia, business, and the cultural sector—an approach expected to transform Ghana into a more competitive and innovative tourism destination.
The Ghana Tourism Authority’s board includes prominent figures such as Gertrude Emefa Donkor and Samuel Seth Passah, while the Ghana Tourism Development Company board features Professor Kobby Mensah and Dora Nanahemaa Adjoa Awindor. Their combined experience is expected to drive Ghana’s tourism and cultural industries forward, promoting iconic sites such as Cape Coast Castle as part of the country’s strategy to become a leading cultural tourism destination in Africa.
Tourism remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic diversification strategy, with the government recognising its potential to drive growth across multiple sectors. The inauguration of these boards comes as Ghana seeks to position itself as a premier destination for cultural and leisure tourism. By streamlining tourism regulations and policies, the new boards aim to better serve both visitors and operators.
Stakeholders have expressed optimism about the sector’s direction. With international tourist arrivals still recovering from the global pandemic, the boards are expected to accelerate revitalisation through strategic marketing, policy implementation, and innovative initiatives. Ghana is positioning itself to compete with other African destinations such as Senegal and Rwanda for cultural tourism investment.
Leaders of the new boards have already committed to advancing tourism and creative industries, including film and music. GTDC Chair Ben Ohene-Ayeh highlighted the importance of strategic accountability in managing Ghana’s tourism assets to achieve tangible outcomes. Analysts note that delivering results promptly is essential, requiring modernised infrastructure, expanded marketing campaigns, and effective promotion of Ghana’s rich cultural offerings.
As Ghana enhances its tourism policies and infrastructure, the newly inaugurated boards face the dual challenge of preserving cultural heritage while creating sustainable, modern tourism opportunities. By focusing on hospitality, transportation, marketing, and the promotion of heritage sites like Cape Coast Castle, Ghana seeks to strengthen its position in the competitive African cultural tourism market.
Through this leadership reboot, Ghana signals a purposeful commitment to unlock growth via the tourism sector. With innovation, accountability, and a focus on cultural heritage, the boards are poised to energise the nation’s visitor-facing economy, making it more dynamic, globally competitive, and capable of delivering lasting economic impact.
