The third edition of the Akwaaba Festival has been launched at the National Theatre .

The festival, which has successfully united patrons from the Diaspora and within Ghana over the past two years, aims to showcase culture and heritage through dance, food, music, and more.

Anticipation is high for exciting performances at the main event, with attendees at the launch eager to learn about the celebration’s criteria.

Mr. Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Tourism Authority, expressed strong support for the initiative, pledging continuous assistance to promote and develop domestic tourism in Ghana through collaboration with the Akwaaba Festival.

Still staying on festivals

Ace guitarist Anthony Akablay and his Abiza Band are set to perform at the Akwaaba Festival on March 8 at the National Theatre in Accra.

The three-day event, organized in collaboration with various cultural and tourism authorities, kicks off with an opening ceremony on March 6.

Akablay and his band, known for blending tradition and modernity in their compositions, will deliver an unforgettable live musical experience.

Having gained popularity both locally and internationally, they have performed in several countries.

The festival aims to attract a diverse audience for live band music, with activities including product exhibitions, music concerts, a food bazaar, and more.

The Woori 2024 Festival in Wa, organized by the Nubuke Foundation Centre for Textiles and Clay, is themed “Weaving a Sustainable Future for the Next Generation.”

Taking place from March 1st to 3rd, 2024, the festival includes workshops led by master weavers, live demonstrations, and interactive sessions for youth engagement.

An art exhibition will showcase diverse textile designs and contemporary artworks.

Panel discussions will explore the role of weaving in Ghana’s cultural identity and sustainable development.

Evening sessions feature cultural performances, music, dance, film screenings, and spoken word poetry.

The festival aims to celebrate Ghanaian weaving traditions and promote sustainable artistic practices.

In news elsewhere on the continent

The Kenyan government has launched the “West Africa Roadshow” to boost tourist arrivals from West Africa, promoting both business and leisure travel.

The initiative comes after a significant change in Kenya’s visa policy.

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and Kenya Airways, along with over 15 travel trade companies, are leading in-market activations from Feb. 5-9 in Nigeria and Ghana.

Acting KTB CEO John Chirchir highlighted the crucial role of the West African market, citing significant improvements in tourist arrivals from Nigeria (6%) and Ghana (48%) in 2023.

The roadshow aims to attract over 400 trade partners and facilitate engagements between Kenyan traders and potential travelers, capitalizing on improved travel access and Electronic Travel Authorization.

Consaga Khisa, chairperson of the West Africa Roadshow, emphasized the importance of partnerships between KTB and the private sector to enhance tourism arrivals in Kenya.

Reports from Kenya’s Tourism Research Institute revealed that arrivals from Africa accounted for 40.7% of the total from January to October 2023. The initiative aims to position Kenya as a competitive destination in African tourism.
