Dangote Group, a leading industrial conglomerate, is not only a key player in the business world but also a trailblazer in environmental sustainability. With a commitment to improving energy efficiency, waste management, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions, the company is actively leveraging opportunities in environmental stewardship.

This commitment is deeply embedded in the operational sustainability pillar, which guides how Dangote Group serves its markets and collaborates with partners to deliver high-quality products and services to valued customers.

Operational Sustainability in the Cement Value Chain:

In the cement value chain, Dangote Group’s operational sustainability approach is centered on maximizing the value of raw materials and local resources. The company is dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of all stakeholders while minimizing its impact on the environment.

This conscientious approach extends across all business activities, demonstrating a thoughtful consideration for the natural environment.

Environmental Performance Metrics:

Dangote Group’s dedication to environmental sustainability is reflected in key performance metrics.
The company tracks and reports CO2 emissions per tonne of product, thermal substitution rate, water consumption, and specific heat consumption.

Notably, the 2022 climate change score, assessed by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), showcased a significant improvement, with Dangote Cement progressing from a B- to a B+ rating, surpassing both the African regional and industry averages.

Alternative Fuel Initiative:

Dangote Group recognizes the pivotal role of alternative fuel in mitigating climate change and reducing the environmental footprint of cement production. The company’s alternative fuel (AF) project, aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 12, aims to achieve a thermal substitution rate of 25% in all plants by 2025. In 2022, the project achieved a 4.3% thermal substitution rate, diverting 157 Ktonnes of waste from landfills and co-processing it in kilns.

Green Jobs and Biomass Utilization:

Dangote Group’s emphasis on biomass as an alternative fuel source not only reduces carbon footprint but also creates green jobs in local communities. Over 46,000 tonnes of biomass were consumed in 2022, contributing to the creation of green jobs in the informal sector. The value chain of biomass, particularly palm kernel shell waste, involves various stages handled by local communities, from harvesting to transportation.

Community Engagement and Sustainable Practices:

The company’s commitment extends beyond its operations, as seen in community engagement initiatives. For instance, in Zambia, Dangote Group supports local communities in establishing cooperative societies to supply agricultural waste as alternative fuel. This not only provides income generation opportunities but also addresses environmental hazards associated with open-air burning.

Dangote Group’s approach to sustainability goes beyond mere compliance, showcasing a genuine commitment to environmental stewardship. From reducing CO2 emissions to creating green jobs and engaging communities, the conglomerate is setting a high standard for sustainable business practices. As the company continues to leverage innovation, technology, and new business development, it stands as a beacon for others to follow in the journey towards a more sustainable and resilient future.
