Engineers proffer innovative solutions to tackle building collapses in Ghana

At the 37th Annual General Meeting of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in Accra, engineers Mark Nyameche and Dr. Ransford Opoku-Darko unveiled innovative solutions to tackle the persistent issue of building collapses.

Going beyond merely identifying the immediate causes and consequences, the two presented a visionary roadmap that painted a compelling narrative for transformation towards a more secure and resilient future.

The engineers exposed a complex interplay of factors contributing to these collapses, including the involvement of non-professionals, poor construction practices, uncontrolled urbanisation, non-compliance with building regulations, and a lack of geotechnical investigations, among others.

Their proposals included full compliance with existing engineering and building regulations, categorization of professional engineers based on expertise and project limits, and the strengthening of the Engineering Council for effective oversight.
