The Bank of England is engaging stakeholders to give their views on the introduction of a
digital pound .

Announced in April 2021, the digital pound would be issued by the Bank of England and could
be used by households and businesses for everyday payments in-store and online and to make
payments to family and friends.

If introduced a digital pound would be interchangeable with cash and bank deposits,
complementing cash.

The consultation with the public was launched because both HM Treasury and the Bank want to
ensure the public have access to safe money that is convenient to use as our everyday lives
become more digital, while supporting private sector innovation, choice and efficiency in digital
payments.

During the consultation, HM Treasury and the Bank of England will engage extensively with
stakeholders in the UK to seek views on the proposed model of the digital pound.

The original deadline of June 7, 2023 has been extended to the end of June to gather more
feedback on access to the digital pound.
