Ghana today commemorated its 68th Independence Day with a scaled-down event held at the Jubilee House in Accra. The celebration, which was traditionally held at the Black Star Square, was adjusted this year in a bid to cut costs while maintaining the essence of the occasion.
President John Dramani Mahama led the ceremony under the theme “Review, Reflect, and Reset Ghana,” calling on Ghanaians to assess the country’s progress, learn from past challenges, and collectively work towards a renewed national vision.
In his address, the president emphasized the importance of unity, good governance, and economic resilience in shaping Ghana’s future. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by the country’s forebears and urged citizens to remain committed to national development.
Unlike previous years, this year’s celebration was marked by a brief flag-raising ceremony and a presidential address, with fewer dignitaries and guests in attendance. Despite the scaled-down nature of the event, the spirit of independence remained strong as Ghanaians reflected on the nation’s journey since gaining freedom from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957.
Across the country, smaller community-based activities, including discussions on national progress and cultural exhibitions, were held to commemorate the occasion. The scaled-down celebration underscored the government’s focus on prudent resource management while ensuring that the significance of Independence Day was not lost.
