The Member of Parliament for Ketu North, Eric Edem Agbana, has called for the effective implementation of policies to ensure truly affordable housing for Ghanaians, particularly the less privileged.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb TV, he questioned the effectiveness of existing affordable housing initiatives, arguing that many of these properties remain out of reach for the average Ghanaian.

Highlighting the country’s housing deficit of over two million units, he urged the government to partner with private developers to address the crisis. He also stressed the need for stronger regulation of the housing sector, ensuring that private developers who receive government support operate within a controlled pricing framework.

As part of his ongoing advocacy against high rental costs, the MP pledged to escalate his campaign using his legislative powers to push for reforms that would make housing genuinely affordable for all.

Dr. Collins Kankam Kwarteng, a lecturer at Kumasi Technical University (KSTU), has raised concerns over rising rent costs in Ghana, urging urgent action to address the issue. Speaking on OTEC 102.9 FM, he emphasized the need for better land utilization, criticizing the sale of vast plots to a few individuals who build limited houses.

He suggested that if the government struggles to construct more homes, it should reconsider land allocation to maximize residential development and lower rent costs. His remarks follow growing complaints from Ghanaian youth about the burden of high rent.

A High Court in Accra has discharged former Minister of Works and Housing, Collins Dauda, and three others in the Saglemi Housing case after state prosecutors informed the court that the Attorney General had dropped the charges.

Attorney General Dominic Akuritinga Ayine justified the decision, arguing that part of the $200 million was used to construct houses, making the charges of financial loss flawed. He also highlighted inconsistencies, including unconsidered payments made by subsequent ministers, such as Atta Akyea’s $5 million approval in 2017.

Dr. Ayine emphasized that the charges lacked the necessary legal precision for a fair trial, leading to the case being dismissed.

RENTS in social and affordable housing operated by Cornwall Council is to increase as part of the tranche of measures as the authority seeks to balance its books.
Councillors voted to accept a proposal to see rents increase by the maximum permissible by legislation.
In the debate, which followed the council’s decision to narrowly approve a budget which will see £48,711,202 of savings, Cllr Olly Monk, the portfolio holder for housing, explained the rationale behind the increase.

He explained that as present, social rents for housing owned by Cornwall Council is among the cheapest in the United Kingdom, and while they sought to increase the amount by the maximum permissible, it represented a smaller increase compared to other areas which had more expensive housing in the same category.
