The Minister-designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has addressed concerns about politicians purchasing properties from state authorities, asserting that there is nothing inherently wrong with such transactions.
During his public vetting in Parliament, Mr. Ibrahim clarified that the state, through entities like the Tema Development Corporation (TDC), is the custodian of land, and any properties sold by these organizations follow legitimate procedures.
He explained that TDC applies a standard rate for property sales, emphasizing that buying properties from state authorities is a legal and legitimate transaction. “There’s nothing wrong with owning a property sold to you by a state authority,” Mr. Ibrahim said during the hearing.
Responding to questions about whether politicians purchasing state land could pose a conflict of interest or be seen as unethical, the Minister-designate highlighted the distinction between legal and illegal land sales. He clarified that his comments referred only to legitimate sales, distancing himself from any accusations related to illegal land transactions. Canada’s housing market experienced a modest two per cent increase in new home construction in 2024, with 245,120 housing starts compared to 240,267 in 2023, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
Despite this progress, the increase remains far below the level needed to address the country’s housing affordability crisis.
Urban centres saw the third-highest number of starts on record, driven primarily by rental construction and growth in provinces like Alberta and Quebec, which saw increases of 32 per cent and 26 per cent, respectively.
However, Ontario and British Columbia experienced declines of 16 per cent and nine per cent, while major cities like Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa also saw decreases.
CMHC estimates Canada needs an additional 3.5 million housing units by 2030 to restore affordability, requiring significantly higher construction rates to meet demand.
