The Chief Executive Officer of the Listening Bureau, Akua Maafo, has emphasized the importance of sustainable building practices, tracing their roots to traditional construction methods used by previous generations.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on PETV,she pointed out that older generations built houses with sustainability in mind, and her company has chosen to focus on green building solutions due to their reduced carbon emissions and positive health and environmental impacts.

Akua Maafo highlighted Ghana’s commitment to sustainability, particularly following the redevelopment of the Apiatse community after the tragic explosion there.

She noted that the construction methods employed are environmentally friendly, with the government also playing a vital role in promoting green initiatives. The projects undertaken by Listening Bureau incorporate solar technology and rainwater harvesting systems to create greener communities. This involves laying pipes around houses to channel rainwater into large underground storage tanks.

The company prioritizes sustainable building materials, emphasizing the use of eco-friendly bricks. According to her, these bricks help maintain cooler indoor temperatures and consume less energy. She expressed optimism about the future of green housing in Ghana, citing the significant benefits for both the environment and the well-being of residents. Many in the construction industry are shifting towards green construction practices, which should become a primary objective for developers seeking to minimize waste and source sustainable materials.

However, Akua Maafo acknowledged challenges in the sector, noting that some artisans lack expertise in sustainable building practices. She stressed the need for more training programs to enhance their skills as part of the broader effort to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7, which aims to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all. She pointed out that the most economical energy is the energy not consumed, and the efficiency of green buildings often yields substantial savings.

She also mentioned her organization’s collaboration with professionals in Kenya to train local artisans, highlighting that reducing carbon footprints begins at the design stage. She praised the EDGE certification program for providing guidelines on building green houses to meet international standards, focusing on energy efficiency techniques like solar power, carbon offset programs, and waste reduction during construction.

She concluuded by noting the cost-efficient design strategies that minimize waste. While building with bricks may be more expensive, it aligns with the sustainable goals her company strives for. Reflecting on the wisdom of traditional architecture, she remarked that houses in rural areas, built with sustainable materials, are not only cooler but also contribute to lower carbon emissions. With over 13 years of experience and numerous awards, the Listening Bureau continues to champion sustainable building practices.
