The 2023 Anlo Hogbetsotsoza has been launched with a strong commitment to preserving the history and cultural heritage of the Anlo people. Togbi Agbesi Awusu II, the Awadada of Anlo State, made it clear during the official launch that the Anlo Traditional Council is prepared to go to great lengths to uphold their history. This includes the possibility of selling properties to acquire the necessary resources to resist any attempts to rewrite the Anlo people’s history.

Togbi Awusu’s statement was made in response to ongoing efforts to disrupt this year’s Hogbetsotsoza celebration. These efforts have included parallel publicity for the festival and legal actions against members of the festival’s planning committee. Nonetheless, Togbi Awusu, with 23 years of experience as the Warlord of the Anlo State, refuted any allegations against the festival’s planning and emphasized that those seeking accountability should follow established procedures.

Mr. Dan Abodakpi, the Awoamezitor and former Member of Parliament for Keta, provided historical context, explaining that Hogbeza was established 61 years ago by Togbi Adeladza II, the former Awoamefia of Anlo. The festival commemorates the migration of Anlo’s forefathers from Notsie to their present location and can only be celebrated under the authority of the current Awoamefia, Togbi Sri III.

He recommended adhering to the teachings of “The Counsel of Togbi Sri,” which emphasize unity and warn against any attempts to rewrite Anlo’s history. Togbi Adzenu III, the Chief of Dzodze and chair of the Hogbeza launch, stressed the importance of preserving the rich cultural heritage and history of Anlo. He urged anyone causing disruptions to cease for the benefit of all.

The launch marks the beginning of a vibrant celebration, including a ban on drumming and noise-making from Sunday, September 10, leading up to a series of events such as the Congress of Chiefs, Mini Hogbeza, Basic Schools Hogbeza, “Nugbidodo” (reconciliation), and “Glimetoto” (an enactment of the departure), culminating in the climax on Saturday, November 4.
