The Ghana National Mosque Complex, located in the Kanda district of Accra, stands as a magnificent testament to both architectural beauty and cultural exchange.

Rising 33 meters into the sky with a diameter of 19 meters, this ultra-modern mosque captures the essence of Ottoman architecture while also adding a touch of elegance and grace to the Accra skyline.

Its significance goes beyond its physical presence, as it symbolizes the strong ties between Turkey and Ghana.

This architectural masterpiece features intricate details and design elements reminiscent of Ottoman style. The arches and perfectly formed domes, standing amidst the framework of wooden formwork during its construction, provide a glimpse of the sophistication associated with Islamic architectural traditions.

The mosque’s official name, Accra Furqan, highlights its role as a spiritual center for the Ghanaian Muslim community. It was generously gifted by the people of Turkey to the people of Ghana, a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange.

The complex’s design showcases an array of domes and semi-domes that contribute to its visual appeal and make it one of the city’s most stunning landmarks.

The Accra Furqan’s construction was a feat of engineering and design. Utilizing 4000 cubic meters of concrete and 700 tonnes of steel, the mosque is a testament to both strength and elegance.

The Ottoman influence is evident in the design choice to make the domes seem almost weightless, defying their actual massive size. Coupled with well-thought-out courtyard spaces and arched walkways, the building manages to convey both grandeur and a sense of airiness.

The architect, Erdogan Getinkaya, drew inspiration from renowned Islamic architectural wonders such as the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmet Mosque) in Istanbul and the Selimiye Mosque. With 50 domes in total, the main dome stands at an impressive height of 36 meters, supported by four 2.1-meter diameter columns strategically positioned at 20-meter intervals.

The four towering 62-meter minarets, situated at each corner of the mosque, serve as iconic features where muezzins perform the adhan (call to prayer). The exterior of the building is adorned with polished marble, and the domes are elegantly clad in lead, reflecting a blend of opulence and tradition.

Beyond its spiritual significance, the Ghana National Mosque Complex encompasses a broader purpose. The facility includes provisions for a school, a health facility, and a residence for the National Chief Imam. This integrated approach reflects the mosque’s role not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for education, healthcare, and community life.

In essence, the Ghana National Mosque Complex stands as a deluxe symbol of unity, cultural exchange, and architectural marvel in the heart of Accra. Its fusion of Ottoman design elements and local influences, coupled with its significance as a gift from Turkey, makes it a source of pride and inspiration for the people of Ghana and a testament to the beauty of Islamic architecture.
