Accra has been ranked as the second most polluted city in Africa, according to the latest air pollution index report from Numbeo, one of the world’s leading data platforms.
The city recorded a score of 89.2, reflecting significant concerns over air quality and environmental conditions.
The ranking considered various indicators, including air and water pollution levels, waste management efficiency, general cleanliness, noise and light pollution, availability of green spaces, and overall living conditions.
Johannesburg, South Africa, topped the list as the most polluted city on the continent, while Lagos, Nigeria, ranked third. Marrakech and Casablanca in Morocco took the fourth and fifth spots, respectively. Harare, Zimbabwe, placed sixth, followed by Nairobi, Kenya, in seventh. Tunis, Tunisia, secured the eighth position, while Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Alexandria, Egypt, ranked ninth and tenth, respectively.
The report highlights growing concerns over urban pollution across major African cities, emphasizing the need for improved environmental policies and sustainable urban planning to mitigate the impact of pollution on public health and overall quality of life.
