Virgin Atlantic to Launch New London-Accra Route in 2025

John Andrew Richardson Advocates for a National Airline in Mahama’s Reset Agenda

Top Travel Trends Set to Redefine 2025

John Andrew Richardson, CEO of Richardson Group of Companies and founder of Oligarch Africa Ltd, has urged President John Mahama to include the re-establishment of a national airline in his Reset Agenda.

Richardson emphasized the positive impact such an airline could have on Ghana’s economy, tourism, and global image.

Reflecting on the legacy of Ghana Airways, he suggested that reviving it or forming a new airline under a public-private partnership (PPP) could significantly boost tourism, job creation, trade, and national pride.

He also highlighted the importance of sovereign control over air travel policies and Ghana’s global image. Richardson’s call aligns with the country’s broader goals of economic growth and global connectivity.

Exciting news awaits travelers to West Africa as Virgin Atlantic announces the resumption of its London Heathrow (LHR) to Accra (ACC) route starting May 1, 2025, after a 12-year break. The airline will operate daily flights aboard its Boeing 787 Dreamliner, offering passengers a premium travel experience.

The UK, home to the third-largest Ghanaian diaspora, has consistent demand for family visits and business travel, making this route a strategic addition. It will also introduce competition to the London-Accra route, which is currently served only by British Airways, likely resulting in more affordable fares for passengers.

Beyond passenger services, Virgin Atlantic’s flights will facilitate trade by offering 30 tonnes of cargo capacity per flight, enhancing the transport of fresh produce and goods between Ghana, the UK, and the US.

The new route promises a convenient schedule: Flight VS403 departs LHR at 22:30 and arrives in ACC at 05:00 (+1), while return flight VS404 departs ACC at 09:15 and reaches LHR at 17:25. With a flight duration of seven hours, it caters to various traveler needs, including family visits, business trips, and connections to Virgin Atlantic’s destinations like New York.

Accra, the vibrant coastal capital of Ghana, boasts rich cultural experiences and attractions, making it a must-visit destination in 2025. Virgin Atlantic’s new route strengthens global connectivity and highlights the increasing appeal of Ghana for both tourism and business.

Travel trends set to dominate 2025 include a strong focus on sustainability, with travelers prioritizing eco-friendly destinations and carbon-neutral travel options. Technology will revolutionize the industry, offering AI-driven trip planning, seamless booking experiences, and virtual reality previews of destinations. Wellness tourism will thrive as people seek health-centered retreats, combining relaxation with holistic well-being.

The rise of “workcations” and digital nomadism will drive demand for destinations with robust infrastructure for remote work. Multi-generational family travel and immersive cultural experiences will gain momentum as travelers seek deeper connections and meaningful adventures. Emerging markets in Africa, Asia, and lesser-explored regions will attract visitors looking for unique and authentic experiences. These trends reflect a shift toward conscious, personalized, and enriching travel experiences in 2025.
