A co-owner of an 18-bedroom apartment building in Cantonments, Accra, Sylvester Ashun, is alleging that unknown men have illegally demolished his property.
According to Mr. Ashun, two months ago, a man identified only as ‘Chief’ approached him and demanded that the premises be vacated. Chief, accompanied by four land guards, allegedly jumped the wall, opened the gates, and confronted the tenants, claiming that they were going to demolish the house.
Mr. Ashun further stated that when he confronted the man known as Chief, the individual claimed to be from the office of the Vice President.
The Chamber of Real Estate (CRE) in Ghana is increasing its advocacy for a social housing scheme to address the country’s growing housing deficit, particularly focusing on the needs of low-income families.
Traditionally, Ghana’s housing policies have been government-centered, but the CRE is pushing for more private sector involvement to bridge the housing gap.
The CRE has partnered with the Chartered Institute of Realtors (CIR) to strengthen its efforts, focusing on affordable rental options, improving informal settlements, supporting public-private partnerships, and advocating for better regulations and incentives for developers.
The chamber also emphasizes the need for skilled labor training for constructing and maintaining affordable housing units. The CRE is calling for collaboration between private institutions, developers, traditional leaders, public institutions, and the government to make significant progress in alleviating Ghana’s housing challenges.
The management of Ghana International School (GIS) has vowed to take legal action to protect its Cantonments property after multiple attempts by unknown individuals to encroach on the land.
On August 29, 2024, a group tried to deliver blocks to the site, claiming the land had been sold. The incident was reported to the Cantonments Police, who responded swiftly.
A similar incident occurred on August 31, 2024, when a sand-laden tipper truck attempted to enter the premises but was blocked by GIS security and police.
Chief Superintendent Ibrahim Opoku from the Office of the President, insisted on the truck’s entry, leading to the arrest of two individuals. GIS has reinforced security and warned against further encroachment attempts.
UK house prices hit a two-year high in August, with the average cost rising by 0.3% to £292,505, according to Halifax.
This marks the highest level since August 2022, prior to the economic turmoil caused by Liz Truss’s minibudget.
Annual house prices increased by 4.3%, the strongest rate since November 2022, reflecting weaker prices a year ago.
Amanda Bryden, head of mortgages at Halifax, noted that easing interest rates have boosted buyer confidence, though affordability remains a significant challenge for many.
