Mr. Kobina Tahir Hammond, the Minister of Trade and Industry, announced that the government has no plans to cap cement prices despite the recent enactment of a Legislative Instrument (LI) on cement pricing.

The new regulations aim to ensure fair pricing across Ghana. Mr. Hammond emphasized the need for fairness in cement pricing and mentioned that a committee will be established to review the pricing strategies of cement manufacturing companies under the LI.

He clarified that the focus is on maintaining sanity in pricing rather than imposing a price cap

The Legislative Instrument (L.I.) to regulate cement prices in Ghana has been passed into law despite objections from cement manufacturers and parts of the public.

Originally, the draft included a requirement for manufacturers to get government approval for pricing, but this was removed.

The Minority in Parliament, particularly Bernard Ahiafor, opposed the L.I., arguing it contradicts the existing act that sets standards for all goods and services, including cement. The government maintains that the regulation will not negatively impact manufacturers.

The Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) is warning electricity consumers in the Northern Region about the dangers of purchasing counterfeit electricity meters, following an increase in reports of fake meters being sold in local markets.

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) recently issued a statement highlighting the risks these unauthorized meters pose to consumers and the electricity supply system.

Ali Simon Jarana, the Northern Regional Director of PURC, emphasized that these meters have not been tested or calibrated by NEDCo, do not meet standards set by the Energy Commission and Ghana Standards Authority, and could result in inaccurate billing and electrical hazards.

The PURC is committed to protecting consumers and plans to conduct public awareness campaigns on the importance of using certified equipment. Consumers are encouraged to report any suspicious meter-related activities to the authorities.
