Ghana’s Minister for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Hon. Andrew Egyapa Mercer, led the dialogue at the opening ceremony of the 6th Africa Youth in Tourism Innovation Summit and Challenge in Windhoek, Namibia.
 
The event set an energetic tone, highlighting the critical role of youth in driving innovation and entrepreneurship within the tourism sector.
 
Emphasis was placed on the need for practical application of academic knowledge and fostering partnerships to enhance entrepreneurial success.
 
Hosted by Africa Tourism Partners, UN Tourism, and BDO South Africa, the summit has previously been held in Ghana, Rwanda, and now Namibia.
 
In addition to Andrew Egyapa Mercer, other notable participants included the CEO of Ghana Tourism Authority, Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, and Professor Kobby Mensah from the University of Ghana Business School.
 
The summit featured discussions on empowering young women in travel, tourism, and tech, and exploring creative arts and culture in entrepreneurship.
 
The three-day summit attracted over 250 in-person delegates and more than 1500 virtual participants worldwide, including ministers, tourism officials, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and students.
 
 
Moving on
 
 
The fourth edition of the Ghana Tourism Expo will be held from September 11-13, 2024, at Akwaaba Village in Accra.
 
This event, anticipated to be the largest tourism expo in Ghana, will feature over 200 exhibitors showcasing African tourism.
 
Activities include cultural performances, cooking demonstrations, travel trade shows, a food bazaar, networking opportunities, leisure ecotourism,  tours, and panel discussions.
 
Notable speakers include King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, Alain St. Ange, and Professor Ezra Aharone.
 
The expo is organized by Inter Tourism Expo Accra, with support from various government ministries and institutions.
 
Registration is open for exhibitors, attendees, and media representatives, with tickets available online.

A Ghanaian delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Transport Hassan Tampuli, has held discussions with aviation stakeholders in Boston to explore direct flights between Boston and Ghana, particularly targeting Accra and Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi.
 
The initiative, facilitated by the newly opened Ghana Consulate in Worcester and the Massachusetts Port Authority, aims to improve travel convenience and enhance economic ties.
 
Prospective airlines may benefit from incentives such as a one-year free landing package and marketing compensation.
 
The success of this initiative might depend on the revival of Ghana Airlines, which could provide consistent service for these routes
 
On the International front
 
Solo travel is gaining popularity, with 42% of travelers planning solo trips this year, according to data from Squaremouth.
 
Most solo travelers (87%) prefer international destinations, and many (53%) plan to spend over $3,000 on their trips.
 
The trend is especially prominent among women over 50, though younger women aged 18-35 also make up a significant portion.
 
Safety concerns are prevalent, with 46% worried about medical emergencies and 22% about crime.
 
Squaremouth advises solo travelers to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes cancellation coverage, travel medical insurance, identity theft protection, and 24-hour assistance.
