The Civil Air Navigation Services Organization’s Africa Safety and Operations Workshop (CANSO), hosted by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), concluded successfully.
The event focused on enhancing safety in air operations across Africa. Thabani Myeza, The Africa Regional Director of CANSO highlighted recent advancements and called for innovative approaches and increased commitment to address safety challenges.
Ing. Charles Kraikue, Director General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, also expressed satisfaction with the outcomes and emphasized the importance of aviation safety in sustaining the industry.
Moving on
ITA Airways, a European carrier, has received approval from the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority to commence commercial flights to Accra.
They will operate a four-time weekly direct flight from Rome, Italy, to Accra, with flight schedules soon to be announced. Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, welcomed ITA Airways’ entry, adding to the diverse portfolio of airlines at Kotoka International Airport.
The inaugural flight is scheduled for June 6, 2024, just in time for the summer peak travel season. GACL is prepared to facilitate smooth operations in collaboration with all airport agencies and ITA Airways.
ITA’s entry is expected to enhance passenger options and connectivity, making it the 24th international airline to operate in Accra.

Prospective travelers have been urged to be careful and check information from travel agencies and their partners. DSI Richard Owusu-Brinfour, Head of the Migration Information Bureau, warned that these agencies can deceive people.
At a forum at the University of Professional Studies (UPSA), Accra, he stressed the need to get proper information and follow legal travel processes to avoid problems like deportation.
Mrs. Sandra Yeboah Nyarko, a lecturer at UPSA, emphasized safe travel and warned about the dangers of illegal migration.
On the international front,
Uganda is hosting the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo 2024 in Kampala to boost its tourism sector. Organized by the Uganda Tourism Board under the theme “Responsible Tourism,” the three-day event features 250 exhibitors and expects over 1,000 visitors.
The focus is shifting to emerging markets like China, although traditional targets include the U.S., Canada, and Germany.
Uganda aims to increase annual tourism revenue to $1.9 billion and raise per-visitor revenue from $1,052 to $1,500.
In 2023, tourism revenue exceeded $1 billion, up from about $687 million in 2022, with 1.3 million international arrivals, predominantly from Africa. Tourism significantly contributes to Uganda’s GDP, accounting for about 5%.
