Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Stephen Amoah has stressed the importance of leveraging domestic tourism to stabilize Ghana’s depreciating cedi.
Speaking at the GIPC Quarter 2 CEOs Breakfast Meeting in Accra, he highlighted tourism as one of the top sectors contributing to foreign exchange inflows and urged stakeholders to prioritize local tourism initiatives.
Dr. Amoah called for homegrown policies tailored to Ghana’s specific economic needs and encouraged collaboration among policymakers and industry players to promote local tourism.
He criticized over-reliance on global models and stressed the need to retain currency within the country by encouraging domestic travel and patronage.

South Africa’s Department of Tourism is collaborating with airlines and stakeholders to market Ghana as a tourism and investment destination for South Africans.This initiative, part of the South Africa-Ghana Bi-National Commission (BNC), aims to balance air traffic and boost tourism in both countries.
At Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban, South Africa’s Tourism Minister, Patricia De Lille, highlighted the importance of aggressive marketing and collaboration under the bilateral agreement to attract South African tourists to Ghana.
She also noted the BNC’s role in enhancing cooperation on security and economic development.
South Africa’s growth in international tourist arrivals is attributed to substantial security investments, including a national safety forum to address tourist safety issues.

Ghana received the TRAINAIR PLUS Silver membership award from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for its outstanding contributions to aviation training.
The award was presented to the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, at the ICAO Global Implementation Support Symposium in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
This recognition allows the Ghana Civil Aviation Training Academy (GATA) to host ICAO courses and support global aviation training while reducing annual subscription fees by $5,000.
The symposium featured discussions on aviation capacity, workforce skills, and continuous learning, providing networking opportunities and potential collaborations.
The Ministry of Transport’s support over the past three years has improved GATA’s training quality and elevated its status with ICAO
Lets turn our attention to Nigeria
Emirates Airlines will resume flights between Dubai and Lagos starting October 1, 2024.
The service had been suspended in 2022 due to challenges in repatriating funds from Nigeria.
The resumption follows diplomatic efforts, including a meeting between Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Adnan Kazim, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, expressed excitement about
reconnecting leisure and business travelers to Dubai and beyond.
He also thanked the Nigerian government for its support in re-establishing the route.
