In a related development
Italy’s national airline, ITA Airways, is set to commence direct flight operations from Rome to Accra, Ghana, starting on June 6, 2024.
Initially, there will be three weekly flights, which will later increase to four per week from July 1, 2024, to October 25, 2024.
ITA Airways, established in 2020, serves over 70 domestic, European, and intercontinental destinations.
The airline will be the sole direct service operator on the Rome-Accra-Rome route. Ghanaians can now book flights on ITA Airways through the airline’s website, as Accra flights have been added to its booking system.
Away from that
Mr. Akwasi Agyeman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), was honored with the Diaspora African Forum (DAF) Bridge Builders Award 2024 at a ceremony at the African Regent Hotel.
The award celebrates leaders dedicated to bridging the gap between Africa and the diaspora.
Mr. Agyeman was recognized alongside six other honorees for his significant contributions to fostering connections and collaboration between Africa and the African Diaspora.
His pivotal role in promoting tourism and enhancing cultural exchange was highlighted during the prestigious event, where notable figures such as former Ghanaian President H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor and Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, CEO of Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, were also acknowledged.
On the International Front
The Spanish government has proposed a ban on some short-haul domestic flights, where alternative train journeys of less than two and a half hours exist.
This aligns with Spain’s 2050 climate action plan to reduce carbon emissions.
Similar bans were implemented in France last year. The proposal excludes connecting flights with international routes, sparing major hubs like Madrid and Barcelona.
The plan, which also considers restricting private jet use, is subject to further review, with no clear timeline for implementation or details on affected routes.
A Hitachi Rail survey suggests public willingness to switch from planes to trains with faster and cheaper options, and support for banning short-haul flights where high-speed rail is available. However, opinions vary on increasing air taxes to fund improved rail travel.
Critics argue that reallocating airport slots from short-haul to longer, more carbon-intensive flights may limit the environmental impact of such bans.
