1.3 Billion International Travels Recorded in 2023

Let’s get started

Tourism Consultant Emmanuel Frimpong is urging the Tourism Ministry and its agencies to decentralize their programs and activities to local regions, municipalities, and districts.

This will allow these areas to become more involved in the tourism industry and see it as a viable business to invest in.

Mr. Frimpong, who is the President of the African Tourism Research Network and the CEO of Pishon Consult Limited, believes that this coordinated effort should be monitored and evaluated to track its impact.

He also suggests leveraging already existing opportunities to promote Ghana’s culture, traditions, food, and heritage in the upcoming year.

With 2024 being an election year, Frimpong encourages the tourism industry to focus on attracting visitors in the first, second, and third quarters.

Global Citizen is bringing back its “Move Afrika: A Global Citizen Experience tour in 2024,” with events in Accra, Ghana, and Kigali, Rwanda.

President Nana Akufo-Addo and PGLang are collaborating on this initiative, known for leveraging live music events to engage youth and create social impact.

The inaugural event in Kigali in 2023 marked the beginning of an annual multi-country tour with plans to expand to three countries in 2024 and five countries by 2025.

PGLang expressed excitement about working with Move Afrika and expanding efforts to Ghana. Overall, Move Afrika seeks to pioneer an international music tour across Africa, fostering economic growth and supporting entrepreneurship in each host country.

Ghana’s aviation industry is thriving, with over 1.9 million flights recorded last year, a notable increase attributed to the lifting of post-Covid-19 travel bans and appealing economic travel packages.
Mr. Dominick Andoh, Managing Editor of Aviation Ghana, sees this growth as beneficial for Ghana’s economy, acknowledging the Ministry of Tourism for promoting programs attracting global tourists.

He encourages collaboration between Ghanaians and tourist agencies to market the country’s attractions, fostering more foreign direct investments and ensuring continued growth in the aviation sector and the overall economy.

On the International front

The latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer reveals that international tourism is rebounding rapidly.

With 2023 closing at 88% of pre-pandemic levels and an estimated 1.3 billion international arrivals.

A full recovery is anticipated by the end of 2024, driven by pent-up demand, increased air connectivity, and a robust recovery in Asian markets.

The Middle East emerged as a leader in recovery, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 22%, while Europe, the most visited region globally, reached 94% of 2019 levels.

Several destinations reported double-digit growth, highlighting tourism’s resilience and its positive impact on economies, jobs, and opportunities.
