As the curtains fell on 2023, the world witnessed a spectacular resurgence in the tourism industry, reclaiming an impressive 90 percent of pre-Covid levels. The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) expanded its global presence with new offices in Africa and the Americas, reinforcing the industry’s global significance.
In Africa, the momentum for tourism gained traction, propelled by the visionary move of countries like Rwanda championing a visa-free model for fellow Africans. Kenya, in particular, made a landmark announcement, offering visa-free access to all Africans from January 2023. This positive trend is expected to continue in 2024, fostering seamless and borderless travel across the continent.
The Africa Visa Openness Report 2023, published by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Union, reflected the progress made in eliminating travel barriers for Africans. More countries opened their doors, aligning with the vision of the “Africa we Want Agenda.”
A notable development in 2023 was the rise of women Ministers of Tourism in Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Sierra Leone. This trend is expected to persist in 2024, with a focus on resolutions to propel the industry forward.
As 2024 beckons, industry experts, policy leaders, and media are hopeful of a more resilient sector.
The collective vision is one of optimism, collaboration, and sustainable growth, with the continent poised to showcase its diverse and rich tapestry to the world.
